Admiral Merchants increases operational efficiency

Solution summary: Admiral Merchants is a trucking company with an advanced network of owner-operators, providing truckload and LTL service with a variety of specialized equipment available for shipper loading. In business since 1929 and headquartered in Minneapolis MN, Admiral Merchants serves entire North America. This case-study explains how Admiral Merchants increased operational efficiency and reduced delays by implementing an on-line portal for Agents and Drivers.

  • Company: Admiral Merchants Motor Freight Inc., Minneapolis MN

  • Industry: Trucking

  • Challenge: The green-screen screen based system from TMW did not allow agent and driver self-service making the operations slow to respond to customer needs.

  • Solution: The backbone of the solution is HCL WebSphere Portal, Web Content Management and Host Access Transformation Services (HATS). The Portal provides self-service applications to drivers and agents to manage their loads. The portal provides secure online access to load information from the TMW system. Google Maps has been integrated with the Portal to provide visual location of the trucks in real-time. The solution runs on IBM RedHat Linux running on IBM hardware.

Solution details: Consumers in the trucking industry as seeking self-service portals for load and truck management. Legacy technology made it difficult for such a digital transformation. Here’s an example of what the user interface looked like in the past:

A 5250 screen from an IBM iSeries (formerly AS/400)

As one can possibly imagine, such a user interface can difficult to use. HCL WebSphere Portal allows converting this green-screen based application to a slick web-based application. The new agent and driver portal now allows secure login to drivers and agents using any major web-browser. The conversion of the 5250 screen to data stream is achieved by Host Access Transformation Services (HATS). The application code is written in Java using Rational Application Developer with an Eclipse Foundation.

The loads can now be implemented using the portal. There’s also capability to contact the drivers through the portal by integrating Twilio SMS with WebSphere Portal.

Conclusion: This solution has now been running successfully for over a decade and Admiral Merchants has come to rely on it for operational efficiency.
